Yet I agree, I talk with Unstuck about changing the whole design. I tried to move on IPB board wich provide a very modern looking board, but they don't want this CMS for personal reasons. I still think that it would be the best choice for many reasons.
I provide some custom images to improve the general look of this theme :

h22 (the ONLY designer) is inactive, and we can't just make own theme :/

Why don't you ask about on fpsbanana????? loads of designers there im sure someone would be willing to have some free hacks for there work. Just dont mention hacks and get them to contact you over some IM.
