How to boost internet speed!

Hi everybody!
Help me with this.
I am a user of EVDO modem which has a capacity of 2 Mbps. But I get rarely 500 Kbps speed.
How could I increase the speed.
My OS is Windows XP professional x64

well 2mbps = 500 kb/s speed
12mbps = 2 mb/s or 1.5?

and btw its mbit not mbps
